  • In the last three years or so small posters featuring famous figures and artworks wearing diving masks are likely to be found hanging on the walls in the streets and alleys of the city of Florence. They send a clear message: art knows how to swim (“L’arte sa nuotare” in Italian).
An anonymous Street Artist, better known as Blub, makes those posters. Blub started working in 2013 in Spain. Then, he moved to Rome, but he became famous in Florence.
Those very meaningful creations, as the artist said many times, are metaphors linked to the old saying “To be in deep water” or “to be underwater” (“essere con l’acqua alla gola” in Italian), meaning to be going through a very difficult moment. Blub’s creations want to convey a message: despite all the crises and difficulties, art will survive, as always. Even more now that the world is facing a very bad political and historical period, one needs to know how to swim and to put their diving masks on!
