The Hidden Face of Perseus

The Loggia dei Lanzi houses a famous bronze statue depicting Perseus while holding Medusa’s head in one hand, and a sword in the other. What is interesting about the statue is that on the back of it, we can see that there is a face carved where the helmet should have been. That face is thought to be a self-portrait of the author, Benedetto Cellini, who decided to sign the statue in that way.
