David, the Republican
Experiencity Category: Cultural Experience

The immense line in front of the Accademia rarely ebbs, even under the terrible summer sun or during oppressive humidity. All are quivering in anticipation waiting to see Michelangelo’s David, symbol of youthful beauty, strength and human perfection. But few realize that he has a deeper symbolism as well.
In fact, August 16, 1501 the consuls of the Wool Guild and the Wardens of the Duomo of Florence (where he initially was to be placed,) commissioned a statue of David. Michelangelo depicted him explicitly at the moment when, sling in hand, he was about to face Goliath. The work became a symbol of the newborn Florentine Republic, ready to face the threat of tyranny that had ruled the city until then under the Medici clan. This post is also available in: Italian French Spanish German Portuguese (Portugal) Russian

Fascinating
The David of Michelangelo is amazing!!
I could stay a whole day admiring this artwork.
There is beauty and relationship at the same time.
It has taken my breath away.
Florence, thank you for giving me this feeling.
(I suggest to buy the ticket online to avoid the long queue)
