What does St. Anne have to do with Florence? Most don’t know that St. Anne is the second saint of Florence, after St. John, and is celebrated on July 26, the day the city was liberated from the domination of the Duke of Athens Gualtieri of Brienne in 1343, thanks to a revolt the people, who, tired of being subjected to abuse and violence managed to expel the invaders. From that moment it was decided to proclaim St. Anna protector of the freedom of the city and to celebrate with a historical procession paying tribute to the Florentine Republic on the streets of Florence and in the Orsanmichele Church on the evening of 26 July.
