San Miniato al Monte: Walk to San Miniato al Monte above Florence

The Church of San Miniato al Monte is perched on the hill, south-east of the historical center, just above Piazzale Michelangelo. The church takes its name from the saint who centuries ago was the first martyr of Florence, and was described as an Arminian prince or a Greek merchant that was making a pilgrimage to Rome.

To get there on footwalk along the Lungarno (the street that runs along the Arno) di Viale G. Poggi and climb up the hill in the direction of Piazzale Michelangelo. Make a brief stop at the Piazzale to enjoy the incredible view of Florence from above, before continuing to climb onwards to San Miniato al Monte.

This church is one of the oldest churches in Florence (April 27th, 1018) and it is a marvelous example of Romanesque architecture. The entrance is free, you can see the sparkling mosaics above the alter and the small chapel in the back right corner of the church. The remains of San Miniato have been kept inside the church since 1013. The splendid Cappella della Crocifisso (Chapel of the Cross), located in the center of the nave, was designed by Michelozzo in 1448 on the request of Piero de’ Medici. Many 14th and 15th century frescoes are still clearly visible on the wall on the right of the nave, there are also frescoes depicting the life of Saint Benedict. Outside the church, you can visit the cemetery, admiring the views of Florence and the surrounding countryside. On your return to the city center, stop and relax in the Giardino delle Rose (Rose Garden) in Viale G. Poggi 2.
