  • Everyone knows the Pitti Palace; everyone associates the Pitti name to that particular building. But the coat of arms?
Do you mean to tell me that the Pitti, one of the most noble and powerful families in Florence, did not have its own coat of arms? In a city where family emblems mark every historic palazzo, none exist on its largest palace?

But there is no coat of arms on the Pitti Palace and throughout Florence, there is no trace of the Pitti emblem.

This is because once the Pitti family fell into economic and political ruin in 1550 the Medici bought the Pitti Palace and Cosimo I uprooted the Pitti symbol from all over the city, eliminating almost all trace of the rival family. Of all the symbols, only one remains that can still be seen on the corner of the building which is in front of the Palazzo Pitti, on the edge of Sdrucciolo de ‘Pitti, the small perpendicular street which leads to the palace.
