  • In the small town of Borgo a Mozzano, in the province of Lucca, there is a famous humpbacked stone bridge, so dramatic, and so admirable, that it was said it only could have been constructed by the devil himself. In fact, legend holds that the head stonemason was so worried about construction delays that he made a pact with the devil. The devil was said to have completed construction in one night, but in return he would take possession of the souls of the first to cross the bridge.
The deal was signed and the bridge constructed. It was the moment to pay the debt and the head mason asked for the local bishop for help, confessing his sin. They devised a trap, the first to cross the bridge was a dog. When the devil realized he was duped, he went crazy throwing himself, and the dog with him, into the river.
Legend holds that the dog reappears on October nights, crossing the bridge; but others claim it is the devil who is still searching for the soul of the head mason.
