The building of Parco delle Cascine began thanks to the ‘de Medici family, who wanted to build a farming and hunting estate. The very name of the park derives from “cascio”, which refers to bovine livestock used to produce cheese and milk.
The rule of the ‘de Medici family ended, and the Habsburg-Lorraines’ began. They turned the park into a recreative space, which by the end of the XVIII century became similar to nowadays park, thanks to the work of architect Manetti. The park became public just in the XIX century thanks to Elisa Bonaparte Baciocci, Napoleon’s sister. Then, the park was acquired by the Municipality of Florence in 1869.
What is interesting about the park is the pyramid-shaped building. This building was probably an icehouse where people stored the snow that fell in wintertime, to use it to make popsicles and ice creams during summer. It was also used to store meats, wine and fruit. It is no coincidence that the building is shaped like a pyramid: as a modern refrigerator, every shelf was used to store a different kind of good.Eto soobshcheniye takzhe dostupna v: Английский Итальянский Французский Испанский Немецкий Португальский, Португалия
