  • The Medici Villa La Petraia is located in the quiet area of Castello, Via Petraia 40 in Florence. It is considered one of the most beautiful and famous Medici villas, situated in a panoramic position overlooking the city of Florence.

The villa was a medieval fortress belonging to the Brunelleschi family from 1364 to 1422 when it was then purchased by the Strozzi. The first news of it becoming Medici property did not come about until October 1544. In 1622 the Villa became a rich gallery containing works of Florentine artists. In 1636, Ferdinando II commissioned Baldassare Franceschini to paint a cycle of frescoes inside the central courtyard, on subjects intended to portray the splendor of the House of Medici and the action of the Knights of St. Stephen.
