  • Recently, underground rooms and corridors were discovered below the Basilica of San Lorenzo. They probably belonged to an ancient city that remained hidden through centuries. On the walls, there are drawings and maps of all the buildings that belong to the San Lorenzo complex, the Medici Chapels and Laurentian Library included. Every room has a ceramic tile with a number carved on it. Merchants used those rooms as cold stores to keep the food they had to sell.
Here, Roman coins, medieval foundations and some anonymous coffins were found. Moreover, there were also finds that date back to a period that goes from the 1300s and the 1700s: crockeries, dishes, pitchers. All these finds had been restored and they will be displayed in the new museum which is about to open.
