Strade Bianche or “White Streets”
Spirit Of Travel Category: Countryside

Tuscany accounts for 45.000 km of the so called “Strade bianche” (“white streets,”) more than any other Italian region. By strade bianche we mean unpaved but otherwise well marked roads suitable for bike tours (but also accessible by foot, motorcycle, horse or car), which are considered heritage sites protected by the Region of Tuscany and the European Union.
These “white roads” were essential for communication throughout the centuries as travels and wars passed through the region. Throughout Val d’Orcia and Chianti miles of “strade bianche” reach deep into the Tuscan countryside.
The name “white” streets, is due to the color of the gravel used for paving the streets. Nothing is more suggestive than these gravel paths which pass through breathtaking scenery and culminated in villages, wine cellars and castles. This post is also available in: Italian French Spanish German Portuguese (Portugal) Russian

WHITE STREETS
Simply fabulous! I rode my bike for a stretch of this street last year. It’s perfect for a day out. You lose yourself in nature. You can do it also by car or by motorbike but in my opinion it’s not the same.
